We have added a new script to our Free Scripts section, named BookReport. BookReport generates reports that identify the relationships among your FrameMaker documents, books, and insets. BookReport can also help you get organized by deleting .backup files and zipping unused documents.

Database-Driven Glossaries for the Workgroup

The glossary feature in Adobe FrameMaker® uses markers to store term definitions. This approach limits definitions to a single paragraph containing a maximum of 255 characters.

GolehTek Brings Glossaries to the Workgroup

GolehTek, LLC has extended FrameMaker's glossary feature with a database that stores definitions for all of the terms used by your organization.

Features

  • View and edit all of the terms defined in the database with the Glossary Toolbar.
  • Define new terms or exit existing terms with the Glossary Toolbar
  • Terms may contain paragraphs, figures, tables, and equations
  • Create multiple definitions per term
  • Generate glossaries automatically for FrameMaker books
  • Automatically add markup that allows your help system to display glossary definitions in pop-up windows

The Glossary Toolbar

The Glossary Toolbar displays all of the terms defined in the database. You can use the glossary toolbar to add, modify, and delete terms and definitions. You can also view the definitions of existing terms.

Defining Terms

Defining a new term involves completing the following steps:

  1. Type the term in the Glossary Toolbar and click the New Term button.
  2. GlossBase will open a new structured document that you can use to define the term. The underlying EDD contains elements for paragraphs, numbered lists, bulleted Lists, figures, equations, and tables.

  3. When you are finished with the definition, click Save in the Glossary Toolbar.
  4. GlossBase will automatically save the term and definition in the database. The term and definition will now be accessible to everyone in your workgroup.

Definitions can contain an unlimited number of paragraphs, tables, graphics, and equations.

Generating a Glossary

When it is time to generate a glossary for a book, GlossBase compares the words in your FrameMaker source files against the terms defined in the database. GlossBase automatically generates a glossary containing all matching terms and definitions.

GlossBase can even add the markers and character formatting necessary to allow glossary definitions to appear as pop-up windows in your online help system.

Availability

GlossBase is available from GolehTek, LLC on a custom-order basis. We custom-tailor GlossBase to meet the unique workflow requirements of our clients. GlossBase is available with the following options:

  • Choice of Database: GlossBase works with a wide range of open-source and commercially available database systems including MySQL®, Oracle®, and Microsoft SQL Server®.
  • Technology-Specific Definitions: GlossBase gives you the option of creating technology-specific definitions for each term, in addition to a generic definition. Our telecommunications customers use this feature to define terms differently in books pertaining to different network technologies. GolehTek, LLC works with you to categorize the definitions and modifies the EDD used for data entry accordingly.
  • Custom Formatting: GlossBase uses a structured template to produce the resulting glossary. The resulting glossary can be incorporated into structured and unstructured FrameMaker books. We work with you to define the formatting applied to the generated glossary. You can always modify the formatting if desired and have the option of formatting the text using context-based formatting rules or paragraph styles, depending on your preference.
